Whalen: Music
Record Store
(Whalen)
I went downtown to the record store
‘Cause I got a collection and I wanted more
I thought I’d go down and buy some new LPs
My mood was bright and my step was light
When I opened the door I was blinded by the light
By the glow and hum of a thousand color TVs
The room was the same but it felt kinda lame
Gone were the record bins replaced with video games
So I went to the counter where the posters all used to be
There I found a kid told him of my collection
And if he’d be so kind could he provide direction
To the record bins so I could choose some new 33s
He said I don’t know, man but I’ve been told
Those things went the way of old dinosaur bones
But can I interest you in the latest DVDs
I shook my head and left in disgust
I guess its ashes and ashes and dust to dust
And I shed a tear for the store that used to be
I guess its just one of those things, one of the casualties that progress brings
And we’re left holding the relics and memories
It makes me want to scream and shout, have they forgotten what it was all about?
Now, where are all the cool kids gonna hang out?
So I went back home and I thought it over
I decided to get myself less than sober
I was feeling like a little Exile on Main Street
In my fingertips it was shiny and round
I put the needle down and turned it up real loud
It was me and Mick and Keith and a bottle of beer
There was a crack and a pop then we rocked Rocks Off
That’s what I wanted to hear down at the record shop
Don’t they know the speed of life is 33-1/3?
I guess its just one of those things, one of the casualties that progress brings
And we’re left holding the relics and memories
It makes me want to scream and shout, have they forgotten what it was all about?
Now, where are all the cool kids gonna hang out?
I went downtown to the record store
‘Cause I got a collection and I wanted more
I thought I’d go down and buy some new LPs
So I got my guitar and I wrote this song
It is a requiem for what is dead and gone
It goes rest in peace my record store…
